Progress

So, I am very pleased to report that, after 10 months of searching, despairing, wailing, and gnashing of teeth, I finally have an interview for a library position. Yes, somebody in the Bay Area looked at my qualifications and decided that I might actually be worth talking to. Huzzah!

Of course, I’m trying very hard not to count my chickens, etc., etc., but it’s not easy. Let us hope something comes of it–even though success would probably mean that we’d eventually be moving, despite our not particularly wanting to leave Sonoma County.

The interview is on Thursday, April 1. Expect me to be spending much of the intervening time reviewing my schoolwork, finding out as much as I can about the library’s workings, and generally pulling myself together.

In one respect, though, it seems like I really am taking things seriously. Today, I did something I’ve never done before, and in fact I swore I would shoot myself before doing.

I bought a tie.

Horrors!

Just look at it.

I took this on Saturday in Annadel State Park. It was our first good hike since the fall. Out our door, all the way up to Lake Ilsanjo, then back down along Rough Go Trail (which turned out not to be nearly as bad as we’d expected from the name). Felt great to get the kinks worked out of our stiffened carcasses.

But the highlight was this photo. Seriously, it’s probably the best photo I’ve ever taken.

Hey, quit looking at me like that. You’d be proud too.

Update: On impulse, I’ve submitted the photo to National Geographic‘s Your Shot program. Who knows, maybe it’ll get into the magazine.

Time for an upgrade.

Lots going on the last few weeks. Work, writing, travel. But the biggest of all was that I finally dumped my Palm Centro, which I’ve actively loathed since the day I got it, for a shiny new HTC Hero. Now this is a 21st-century device. I’m still sorting out all that I can do with it, but none of it is the hard slog that it was with the Palm.

There’s a blog post about interconnectedness brewing in the back of my head, partially inspired by the new device. Something about the parallel between the ever-denser connections between people and the connections between neurons in the brain. I know, I know, it’s been done. Which is why I haven’t done it yet; I’m trying to come up with a new angle.

Actually, I’m considering starting up a separate blog for my wonkier philosophical ideas. There’s a lot of weirdness floating around in my head, and somehow this doesn’t seem like quite the place for it. I still own verystrangeloops.com, but I may buy a new name instead. We’ll see.

Anyway, that’s it for now, methinks; I know it’s not much, but it’s late. Tomorrow we go to Harbin once again (only for one night, alas), and so sleep is badly needed. We’ve both been running at full speed for the last few weeks, so even this short of a break will be welcome.
